Endocrine disrupters

MSG, GMO, more and more insecticides and pesticides for intensive agriculture to supply the meat industry, plastics, medications, et cetera, all this end up in our food and water, and then in our body. Endocrine disrupters. We notice some alarmous changes: hundreds of toxic substances (like PCB, DDT, mercury...) in everybody's blood, polluted flora, more and more mutations and malformations in the fauna (hermaphrodite animals, infertility...). Endangered species... including us, humans. Males' sperm is getting poor quality and penis gets smaller over generations. Hormones are inversed or amplified: 8 years young girls with huge breasts, pubic hair and menstruations, young boys with female breast...

"It's official: Men really are the weaker sex

Evolution is being distorted by pollution, which damages genitals and the ability to father offspring, says new study. Geoffrey Lean reports

Sunday, 7 December 2008

The male gender is in danger, with incalculable consequences for both humans and wildlife, startling scientific research from around the world reveals.

The research – to be detailed tomorrow in the most comprehensive report yet published – shows that a host of common chemicals is feminising males of every class of vertebrate animals, from fish to mammals, including people.

Backed by some of the world's leading scientists, who say that it "waves a red flag" for humanity and shows that evolution itself is being disrupted, the report comes out at a particularly sensitive time for ministers. On Wednesday, Britain will lead opposition to proposed new European controls on pesticides, many of which have been found to have "gender-bending" effects.

It also follows hard on the heels of new American research which shows that baby boys born to women exposed to widespread chemicals in pregnancy are born with smaller penises and feminised genitals.

"This research shows that the basic male tool kit is under threat," says Gwynne Lyons, a former government adviser on the health effects of chemicals, who wrote the report.

Wildlife and people have been exposed to more than 100,000 new chemicals in recent years, and the European Commission has admitted that 99 per cent of them are not adequately regulated. There is not even proper safety information on 85 per cent of them.

Many have been identified as "endocrine disrupters" – or gender-benders – because they interfere with hormones. These include phthalates, used in food wrapping, cosmetics and baby powders among other applications; flame retardants in furniture and electrical goods; PCBs, a now banned group of substances still widespread in food and the environment; and many pesticides.

The report – published by the charity CHEMTrust and drawing on more than 250 scientific studies from around the world – concentrates mainly on wildlife, identifying effects in species ranging from the polar bears of the Arctic to the eland of the South African plains, and from whales in the depths of the oceans to high-flying falcons and eagles.

It concludes: "Males of species from each of the main classes of vertebrate animals (including bony fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) have been affected by chemicals in the environment.

"Feminisation of the males of numerous vertebrate species is now a widespread occurrence. All vertebrates have similar sex hormone receptors, which have been conserved in evolution. Therefore, observations in one species may serve to highlight pollution issues of concern for other vertebrates, including humans."

Fish, it says, are particularly affected by pollutants as they are immersed in them when they swim in contaminated water, taking them in not just in their food but through their gills and skin. They were among the first to show widespread gender-bending effects.

Half the male fish in British lowland rivers have been found to be developing eggs in their testes; in some stretches all male roaches have been found to be changing sex in this way. Female hormones – largely from the contraceptive pills which pass unaltered through sewage treatment – are partly responsible, while more than three-quarters of sewage works have been found also to be discharging demasculinising man-made chemicals. Feminising effects have now been discovered in a host of freshwater fish species as far away as Japan and Benin, in Africa, and in sea fish in the North Sea, the Mediterranean, Osaka Bay in Japan and Puget Sound on the US west coast.

Research at the University of Florida earlier this year found that 40 per cent of the male cane toads – a species so indestructible that it has become a plague in Australia – had become hermaphrodites in a heavily farmed part of the state, with another 20 per cent undergoing lesser feminisation. A similar link between farming and sex changes in northern leopard frogs has been revealed by Canadian research, adding to suspicions that pesticides may be to blame.

Male alligators exposed to pesticides in Florida have suffered from lower testosterone and higher oestrogen levels, abnormal testes, smaller penises and reproductive failures. Male snapping turtles have been found with female characteristics in the same state and around the Great Lakes, where wildlife has been found to be contaminated with more than 400 different chemicals. Male herring gulls and peregrine falcons have produced the female protein used to make egg yolks, while bald eagles have had difficulty reproducing in areas highly contaminated with chemicals.

Scientists at Cardiff University have found that the brains of male starlings who ate worms contaminated by female hormones at a sewage works in south-west England were subtly changed so that they sang at greater length and with increased virtuosity.

Even more ominously for humanity, mammals have also been found to be widely affected.

Two-thirds of male Sitka black-tailed deer in Alaska have been found to have undescended testes and deformed antler growth, and roughly the same proportion of white-tailed deer in Montana were discovered to have genital abnormalities.

In South Africa, eland have been revealed to have damaged testicles while being contaminated by high levels of gender-bender chemicals, and striped mice from one polluted nature reserved were discovered to be producing no sperm at all.

At the other end of the world, hermaphrodite polar bears – with penises and vaginas – have been discovered and gender-benders have been found to reduce sperm counts and penis lengths in those that remained male. Many of the small, endangered populations of Florida panthers have been found to have abnormal sperm.

Other research has revealed otters from polluted areas with smaller testicles and mink exposed to PCBs with shorter penises. Beluga whales in Canada's St Lawrence estuary and killer whales off its north-west coast – two of the wildlife populations most contaminated by PCBs – are reproducing poorly, as are exposed porpoises, seals and dolphins.

Scientists warned yesterday that the mass of evidence added up to a grave warning for both wildlife and humans. Professor Charles Tyler, an expert on endocrine disrupters at the University of Exeter, says that the evidence in the report "set off alarm bells". Whole wildlife populations could be at risk, he said, because their gene pool would be reduced, making them less able to withstand disease and putting them at risk from hazards such as global warming.

Dr Pete Myers, chief scientist at Environmental Health Sciences, one of the world's foremost authorities on gender-bender chemicals, added: "We have thrown 100, 000 chemicals against a finely balanced hormone system, so it's not surprising that we are seeing some serious results. It is leading to the most rapid pace of evolution in the history of the world.

Professor Lou Gillette of Florida University, one of the most respected academics in the field, warned that the report waved "a large red flag" at humanity. He said: "If we are seeing problems in wildlife, we can be concerned that something similar is happening to a proportion of human males"

Indeed, new research at the University of Rochester in New York state shows that boys born to mothers with raised levels of phthalates were more likely to have smaller penises and undescended testicles. They also had a shorter distance between their anus and genitalia, a classic sign of feminisation. And a study at Rotterdam's Erasmus University showed that boys whose mothers had been exposed to PCBs grew up wanting to play with dolls and tea sets rather than with traditionally male toys.

Communities heavily polluted with gender-benders in Canada, Russia and Italy have given birth to twice as many girls than boys, which may offer a clue to the reason for a mysterious shift in sex ratios worldwide. Normally 106 boys are born for every 100 girls, but the ratio is slipping. It is calculated that 250,000 babies who would have been boys have been born as girls instead in the US and Japan alone.

And sperm counts are dropping precipitously. Studies in more than 20 countries have shown that they have dropped from 150 million per millilitre of sperm fluid to 60 million over 50 years. (Hamsters produce nearly three times as much, at 160 million.) Professor Nil Basu of Michigan University says that this adds up to "pretty compelling evidence for effects in humans".

But Britain has long sought to water down EU attempts to control gender-bender chemicals and has been leading opposition to a new regulation that would ban pesticides shown to have endocrine-disrupting effects. Almost all the other European countries back it, but ministers – backed by their counterparts from Ireland and Romania – are intent on continuing their resistance at a crucial meeting on Wednesday. They say the regulation would cause a collapse of agriculture in the UK, but environmentalists retort that this is nonsense because the regulation has get-out clauses that could be used by British farmers."

Toxicity

Industries drop mercury in water and this mercury becomes hightly toxic once absorbed by the simple organisms in water: methyl mercury. It is consumend and accumulated during the food chain, so that we found out that the fish who are predators (salmons, tuna, etc) have in their tissues a concentration 10 millions more powerful than what is found in the water where they live.

Concerning all the toxic products we encounter in our food, water, air, cosmetics, household products, even our clothes, and that enter our bodies by nose, mouth and even by our skin, the researchers made some shocking discoveries: sometimes tiny doses (like 1 ppm or even 1 ppb) can be more dangerous than higher dose. The reason is that when the quantity of a toxic product is so tiny, our body don't even notice it, and all this accumulates everyday, until you developp a tumor at the age of 40.But when our body encounters bigger quantities of toxic products, the immune system is activated and tries to block or reject it.
Another important new discovery: the combinations of different chemicals together can produce even more dangerous products. PCB is just a molecular variation of the chlorine atom, yet it's the most toxic product made by man. When companies test their substancies, they do this on the substance alone, not associated with other chemicals. So governement authorize chemicals since more than 50 years that way. But a product is inoffensive alone may not be when combined with one or two other products, or more; there's now hundreds of different chemicals in our food, water, sprayed on plants, etc...

Researchers were wondering why the population of belugas in the St-Laurent river in Quebec, Canada, was decreasing and why many of them are so sick. We find corpses of them on the shore. Anylisis show that their flesh contains an astonishing cocktail of chemicals, and that may be the cause of many of their cancers.

A researcher discovered that too much residues of products of chlorine in tap water was responsable for anormally high level of misscarriage in a certain area. Her studies forced the governement to lower the maximum acceptable amount of chlorine in tap water.

The same researcher analyzed the sperm of 4 great cities like New York, Los Angeles, etc... and a rural area of Missouri. She tought the sperm would be better in the rural zone, away from the pollution of cities... No. She found out that the sperm quality of inhabitants of Missouri was incredibly poor. She went there and tried to find out what is different there and which is not present in urban areas... Agriculture: huge fields of wheat, corn, etc... and huge amounts of chemicals sprayed on these, going in the rivers, then ending up in tap water.

Half a century ago, before the crazy megalomaniac agriculture we have now, called agrobusiness, the fields were smaller, with no chemicals employed, and there were trees and ponds that were blocking, absorbing the chemicals if there was any, before they reach the rivers and ocean. Now it's different. Farmers cut down all trees until they meet the shore so they have more space to grow their stuff, and therefore more cash in their pockets. So their chemicals, sprayed before seeding, are not supposed to go in foods (eventhough there's some) and it goes straight in our water.

Now guess what, a mad scientist is creating plants that will be specifically designed to absorb huge quantities of nitrogen, or mercury, etc... to put them along the shores so they will pump all the chemicals before it reach the water. He's working on about 20 genes, for 20 genetically modified plants. Talking about trying to cure instead of removing the problem. It's like legalizing and encouraging pollution.

The World According to Monsanto

(Lire le texte en Français -- more complete text in French) Monsanto could argue that they’re a good company claiming that otherwise they wouldn’t have stayed a hundred years. Others could say that the people don’t pursue a good company that often, or that a good company don’t pursue honest farmers that are just trying to make a living… Monsanto have been in hundreds of cases in court, and still is in another hundred right now, always and always.

Check out this great article that reviews many points about GMO's and Monsanto.

Reproductive changes:
Cows injected with genetically modified growth hormones (rBGH) had more birth defects, reproductive disorders, difficulty getting pregnant, foot and leg injuries, metabolic disorders, indigestion, bloat, diarrhea, lesions, increased size of heart, liver, kidneys, ovaries and adrenal glands, and shortened lives. In the face of this data, Monsanto dismissed this evidence in its own report to the FDA as harmless physiological shifts. [p.88-89]

Research result: Rats that were fed GM potatoes suffered damaged immune systems. Their white blood cells responded much more sluggishly than those fed a non-GMO control diet. Other GMO-fed rats in this experiment had smaller, less developed brains, livers and testicles, and had enlarged tissues, including pancreas and intestines. Some showed partial atrophy of the liver. Furthermore, significant structural changes and a proliferation of cells in the stomach and intestines of GMO fed rats may have signaled an increased potential for cancer. These rats developed these effects after just ten days. Some of the above changes lasted after 110 days, a time period corresponding to about 10 years of human life. [p.12]

SUMMARY
For those who don't know, Monsanto is a sick company about a century old, and is now considered as the most controversial multinational ever. It is the creator of good products such as PCBs (now banned, this is one of the most toxic and dangerous substances ever created by man. There was some in everything, from freezers to air conditionners. An estimated 240 000 tons of PCB went in our environment, especially water. Now it will stay in the food chain for centuries. Everybody has some in their organism. To eat fish is the best way to increase your dose of PCB.)
Before that, Monsanto was the main participant in the race to nuclear bomb for the governement of USA. The scientists of Monsanto were developping the first atomic bom that was soon to be launched on Hiroshima.
But other laboratories were involved with the Pentagon and White House. Still, Monsanto was a big part in the Manhattan Project.
Between this and the PCB, Monsanto made the Agent Orange that waas sprayed over Vietnam jungles during the war. It destroyed the forests, killed thousand of people, injured many others, many are physically disabled and still today we observe a high rate of malformations at birth. An hospital in Vietnam displays what resulted of this deadly substance that is dioxine on human health : in bocals, human foetuses with monstrous difformities : a 2 headed baby, a body with no head, one with no brain, another with a gigantic brain. A foetus with a penis between the eyes.
Then in the end '80s they come up with BGH (bovine grownt hormones) to give to dairy cows to make them produce up to 40 liters of milk per day instead of 5. With all the diseases that comes with it. So the cows need astronomic amounts of antibiotics in order to survive.
After this, they arrive with the Roundup, an herbicide for big and small farmers, falsly presented as "biodegradable and good for the environment", they're gonna have to pay a fined for this and remove this label. Note that this product contain some of the agents that were found in the Agent Orange used by the army. In fact, it is a very harmful product and is the #1 herbicide used for suicides.
They then started to invest in the agrobusiness domain and put on the market their GMOs (genetically modified organisms) like the corn Bt, or Soy RoundUp Ready, designed specially to resist their herbicide. Indeed, you could empty a whole bottle on this soy and it would be like nothing happened while just a few drops kill any other plants or 125ml kills an human.
They made a fortune, every farmer buy this new soy, AND the RoundUp as a special package, because GM soy requires this herbicide in order to grow. Reason is this is a like a plant on steroids, it needs huge amounts of fertilizers, more water, it drains all energy from soil, leaving an poor dirt.

Now Monsanto is attempting to acquire water rights in countries with water shortages in a move to control the people's basic means of survival

Then they try to patent the genes of pig, so all farmers would pay them royalties for each pig they own.
They also tried to put the Terminator seeds on the market, nothing less than infertile crops, to rule once and for all over all the farmers of the world by taking them the right to grow plants when they want.
What’s next, Monsanto is gonna try to own the rights on the soil we’re walking on and the air we breath ?
This is like science fiction, but nothing is too much for Monsanto, a company that "don't want to lose one dollar" even if it means to kill people.

The problem with GMO is not only the health issue on humans (though Monsanto claims there’s no risks of harm on short term, but nothing says there’s no problems after long exposition. And nothing says GMO are not partially responsible for the increase of cancers and other diseases), no, the most harm can come from the abundant use of pesticides and insecticides, especially Roundup. Another problem concerns the ethics of life and the environment. Now that life can be patented by big lobbys such as Monsanto, not only they own and control the food, at the same time they rule over the world, they own us. In fact, someone from Monsanto once said : "we own you, we own everyone who buy our products". -

The other big issue is concerning the planet : GMO spread and the perspective that one day the whole planet will be genetically modified is possible, all the plants, insects, animals will be affected, infected... Yes, Man made himself the new God.

Monsanto’s cotton seeds are 4x more expensive than normal cotton seeds. Monsanto owns most of the seed market, forcing poor Indian farmers to buy Monsanto’s seeds. The GM cotton is inefficient on Indian soil, it simply doesn't grow. Many farmers got ruined becaus ethey had to borrow money to buy the seeds. When they don't have anything left... Each 8 minutes, an Indian farmer kills himself, often with the very same product that caused his misery, the Roundup herbicide.

Today, and since many years, movements around the world, especially in France and Europe, milite against the giant of biotechnologies Monsanto, and it's crazy products :

  • tomatoes+pig
  • toad + potatoes
  • soy + virus
  • salmon+strawberry
  • sourmon+corn

Some ask for decent laws of GMOs labelling. Others want that this company returns to hell and with it's products too.
We must not wait to see what the future will show us, we must act now before it is too late.

MODIFIED FOOD AND PLANET, DO WE WANT A GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FUTURE?
In England, GreenPeace militants are fighting against GMOs, like blocking a cargo full of 125 000 tons of transgenic corn.

Cows feed with gmo corn produce gmo milk. Some cows have difformities like : shitting by the tits. Not to mention the other thing from... guess who : Monsanto -- BGH that make HUGE tits to the cows, sometimes it is so big and heavy that it touch the floor or the cow cannot move, is sick. In fact the vast majority of dairy cows are on those hormones and dozens of other drugs and antibiotics to try to counter the many infections afflicting cows. Because of all this, their milk is unfit to consumption, containing high levels of pus, viruses, bacterias, blood, toxic residues of the nombrous chemicals and drugs, not to mention that the hormones go in the milk too. And people drink this, beleiving blindly what the national association of milk producers present as the "perfect" drink, essential to human health.

Truth is : www.notmilk.com

When we want to ask questions to big gmo societies, they never respond. They work in the dark, protected from medias and public. They hide like the criminals and murderers that they are.
Gilles Eric Seralini is a scientist that begins to scare big companies like Mosanto, he critics openly gmo’s and what he says is based on scientific facts. Since many years, this molecular biology professor patiently collects all proofs of gmo’s dangers. Often, Mosanto and others tried to buy his silence. He has secret files showing the nocive effects on animal’s health. Effects on blood cells counts, sugar level in blood, female and male hormones, etc. To know if this is also dangerous for humans, he’s making experiments in his laboratory. Monsanto employs ex-cops and ex-CIA agents to work as secret agents, to spy or to intimidate farmers. They will enter in a private property such as a flield and take samples of crops and grains in plastic bags to analyze them. If the searchers of Monsanto's laboratories find out it contains even just a small pourcentage of their genetically modified crops, they will pursue the farmer and win. Even if the farmer never bought or never sowed any GMO in his field... thing is that the contamination of GMO's are a big problem. The wind, bees, pollen, trucks, etc... It should be Monsanto who should compensate the farmers for the contamination, not the opposite. This is a crazy world...

Aberrant COMMENTS on the Web - Science & Life

Personnal views which I don’t agree with. They all reflect the opposite of my thoughts, so I don’t need to comment on most of them. Sometimes silence is the best. When someone says something stupid, remain silent, what he just said will as if it didn't hit his interlocutor and will rebound toward him, forcing him to face what he says, to think about it. Sometimes I will add just a quote from a great thinker that said something brillant related to what I just heard.

"If we believe absurdities, we commit atrocities"-Voltaire
"The custom is to accept any atrocity." -- George Bernard Shaw

Extreme stupidity is a weapon as powerful as irony is a great tool to serve a good cause. I just want to expose common sense to the world, by turning those comments against themselves.

Sometimes stupidity is so big it is funny, or sad, depending on who reads it. But one thing is sure, stupidity

-on dangerous new technologies that are still unknown, like the LHC (that could produce tiny black holes on Earth) and that are hasardous. We know that big accidents already happened : Tchernobyl, Bhopal, GMO’s, spacecraft explosions, etc. Should we or not risk people life in the name of science and progress ? Is technical progress so important or can we live (much happier) without any technologies even electricity ?
Youtube- autor unknown -
Wow, you are so terribly ignorant... without science we wouldn't have cars, electricity, healthcare and medicine, you favorites toys, hell you probably wouldn't even exist because there wouldn't have been enough food for all of us... We as species are so successful that within a couple of years we will reach a point where we are with so many that it really isn't going to matter at all if we are going to lose a few anyways. We are where we are now really mainly because of science.

-Posted by Brian W. about a text called “Have You Eaten Your Genetically Modified Food Today?” there.

As a biotechnophile (I wonder if anyone else has ever used that word...) it is my opinion that fear of GM foods is based purely on ignorance. I have to wonder how many of those people who hate GM foods even know what a gene does in general. I'd go so far as to say I dislike organic foods. For thousands of years humans have been breeding the nutrition OUT of crops. Farmers have always picked the plants with the highest yeilds to breed, but in order for a plant to make a bigger yield, it has to ditch some of its nutritional value. Today our staple crops are full of starch, and seriously lacking in protein. Genetically modifying these crops could put the nutrition back in them, among other things. So what if my wheat has a fish gene in it. All it does is make an extra protein that protects it from cold weather. It's not gonna taste like fish for god's sake. People also fear GM crops getting into the wild and contaminating the natural gene pool. To that I say: so what? A GM crops gets into the wild and....? Now we have the ocassional plant the can survive colder weather too. Big deal. To be sure we should move forward slowly, and we should test these GM crops carefully, but this irrational fear is foolish. Learn what a gene does (codes for a protein), and become less ignorant before you pass judgement on GM foods.

-Of course, I agree  with the comments of Heretic616:
Looks like a couple of Joe Six Packs responded. Let's see, Brian says we need to become less ignorant, but he says "Big Deal" if an unintended consequence of GE occurs that just happens to be beneficial. What about the other not so beneficial outcomes that you realize down the road. These changes are in some cases irreversible and self perpetuating. BTW it was a flounder gene placed into a tomato to keep it from freezing. I try to buy all organic thank you. At least there is a standard that still has some meaning.
I suppose you think it's "irrational or foolish" to require labeling all GE foods so that consumers can make a choice to be guinea pigs or not?
Senor Craig equates today’s laboratory gene manipulation field trials (experiments) with yesterdays grafting and crossbreeding. Are you serious? You think the motive is to feed the world's hungry you're mistaken buddy. It's about maximizing profit, sold under the guise of altruism. I'm sure you also bought "Operation Iraqi Freedom" and "Clear Skies Initiative" and "Healthy Forests Initiative" eh?
Science beating down religion? You've got it all wrong. The population crisis and most wars can attributed to your wonderful religions. I'll stick with science thanks but not Monsanto's irresponsible brand.

Frankenstein Food

I will often talk about GMO's (genetically modified organism) or GE (genetically engineered) because I think it is the most abherant thing mankind has ever done to Nature, it is the worse insult, and the worse crime imaginable.
-This subject is so vast that I will divide my blogs. When it's about GMO in foods, I will post here. When I want to talk about other aspects of GMO's, like the ethics and environmental aspects, or about Monsanto (the biggest producer of GMO, and the worse) it will be on my other blog.

Here's a link to my Playlist of video documentarys about this real nightmare that are genetically engineered organisms. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=AB17391E6E4F9803

contamination

In the GMO's debate, we hear often about the organic fields contamination by the genetically modified crops. But we hear less often about this theory (not so much of a theory we'll see) : the human contamination by GMO's. Samething, we're made of cells and proteins, just like a plant in a field.
Let me explain: GMO's contain proteins modified in laboratory with another organism inserted in it's genetic data. For soybeans it's a virus (yes, there's a virus in every GM soybean you may eat or that the cattles surely eat before they're transformed into meat). This virus, like most bacterias and simple organisms, synthetize their amino acids at a rate of around 14 amino acids per second. That's pretty fast.
Now, we know that each organism and each specie makes it's own proteins out of amino acids at a particular tempo. For humans, it's between 2 and 8 amino acids/sec, depending on which amino acid, but an average of 4.
When we eat GM food directly, or via animal proteins from animals that have been feed with GM food, those altered proteins enter our body and we become these, our body builds itself out of the amino acids it finds via nutrition -- "you are what you eat".

Therefore, (and it has been proven in a laboratory experiment where a human cell culture is affected by genetically modified proteins inserted in it), our body slowly contaminates, just like organic plants in a field where GM crops may invade by the wind, bees, birds and humans.

What we will witness will be our own accelerated ageing. More than double the speed. That's right, because our proteins will die and born at a faster rate : 14 amino acids/second instead of 4.

How come we're not already genetically modified ? What makes you think we're not ? How come there's no side effects ? What makes you think there's none ? Like the phenomenal increase in the rate of cancers during the past few years, as well as many other diseases. How how often we see articles on how to slow ageing by eating well, slowing down metabolism or eating less proteins.
What we should understand is that we don't become 100% modified in one day. We may be more or less 1% GM, depending on the amount of each person's consumption of GM foods. It takes time to be 5, 10 or 20% contaminated, just like for plants in a field, because we're made of many cells that regenerates. But once we have a few genetically modified cells in our body, in other words once the propagation has begun, and it's the case for everybody already, those few cells duplicates and the number of altered cells becomes larger and larger over the normal cells.
A sort of tumor, which is exactly what GM foods are.
